March 2023

Triangle of Life

I was reading a small story called "The Paperback Mentor" by Robert Rogers depicted three chambers of an hourglass, like a three-leaf clover. One chamber/leaf is family, the next is career, and the last is self.

These chambers can exchange the sand among themselves, but, like a three-leaf clover, there will always be one chamber on top with the sand drained from it to fill the other two.

Work travel fills and career and gives you alone time for yourself, but the family chamber is drained.

Taking vacation fills, we hope, family and self, but career isn't getting much sand.

The point of the book section is to find the balance that works for you and your family. And when you realize it is an ever-moving focus, it will be easier.

Also, if the family is fine, we can focus on the other chambers, but there are times an immediate shift of focus (ER visits with the kids) when it is okay work paperwork is late.

Be kind to yourself and keep a pulse on which chambers need sand and where you can spare it.

Editing:

This story made me work on developing the space my characters were in. I enjoyed expanding the sentences and even adding sentences to build the restaurant as I saw it in my mind.

I will admit a few words still got cut, but it is a better piece now.

Writing Weekend

March 25th through the 26th was the newly named Storyteller's Hearth write-a-thon. I wish I could remember how many they have done so far, but it has been a lot.

As I was driving across the country, I was unable to do anything other than monitor streams.

I was able to read a bit and edit a few flashes, but for the most bit, it was great to have the community together.

Write-a-thons bring us together and help us see we're not the only ones struggling to get words on the page.

But, the great thing is the streams are available to watch at anytime after being aired. For that very reason, below are the links to the stream playlists.

Writing Space

For those of you that don't know, I have an expected move in May. Well, the end of March has sent the family house hunting.

Now, there is the typical things a house should have for us, fenced backyard (dogs), plenty of counter space in the kitchen (we like to cook), number of bedrooms/bathrooms, etc. But the one thing I was keeping my eye out for was my new writing space.

So, guess what, I didn't get a designated writing space. But, I still will have a designated corner in the master bedroom or guest bedroom. And we have a fireplace, which is a great writing, reading spot.

Here's to new beginnings! I hope my new space is just as creative sparking as my current one.

Readjust Schedule

One of my goals for 2023 was to edit 104 of the 250 flashes I had drafted during 2022.

Well, goals need to be flexible.

I have stopped streaming on Twitch Sunday nights, and with my trip and sickness I've missed three Flash Fiction Lives.

So, for my own mental health, I've decided to keep my 104 edit goal (about 2 flashes a week) but outside of FFL, I am behind on my goal. But that just means I need to change my method, not my goal, and realize time is on my side. Not to mention holidays and such.

As of 31 March, I have 19 flashes edited of the projected 26 flashes I would need by the end of the 13th week of the year to stay on track of the 2 flashes per week.

Sounds like my best bet is a popup livestream. Stay tuned!
